The Night Study Group invites you to:
A presentation by Andreas Isler on Wolfgang Leupold - Wednesday, February 27
A Swiss Geologist's photographs of East Kalimantan in the 1920s.
Do you ever wish you could step back in time and experience life in the remote areas of Indonesia at an earlier time? You can experience an armchair voyage if you come to the Night Study Group on27 February. Working as an oil prospector, the Swiss Geologist, Wolfgang Leupold captured life in East Kalimantan through his camera lens during his six-year residence. He worked closely with the local population, exploring the terrain through waterways and the rainforest with the help of indigenous Dayaks and nomadic Punan and Basap as guides. He also recruited local Malay and Chinese trainees to teach them the art of cartography. These photographic collection is a visual memoir of his experience together with his wife and newborn son in remote East Kalimantan.
Mr. Andreas Isler, a curator from the Ethnographic Museum of the University of Zurich and a lecturer of Social and Cultural Anthropology, will share a sample of these photographs that will be donated to the University of Indonesia to enhance joint historical and ethnographical research. Please join us to appreciate this valuable source on expatriate life with the indigenous community in East Kalimantan circa 1920s.eSuggest speakers or topics for the monthly sessions.
