‘Mangrow with Me’ Project: Planting Hope in Indonesia

On September 8, 2024, 30 international students, including those from ACS Jakarta, gathered at Northern Jakarta’s Taman Wisata Alam Mangrove Angke Kapuk to participate in the "Mangrow with Me" project. This mangrove ecological park, a key Indonesian nature reserve, is vital for coastal defence, as the mangroves act as natural seawalls, protecting the island from tsunamis and typhoons. The project, led by ACS Jakarta students through the Mangroovy Group, focuses on expanding mangrove habitats and raising awareness of their environmental significance.

The "Mangrow with Me" project, initiated by the Mangroovy Group, is led by ACS Jakarta students with the goal of environmental conservation. The group began by planting 100 mangroves in its first year and has continued expanding its efforts through 2024, involving more participants each year. Park Seung-heon, one of the student leaders, emphasised the project's broader goal, stating, "Through this project, we want to raise greater awareness in Indonesian society about the importance of environmental protection."

At 11:30 a.m., students gathered at the park entrance for a brief orientation before heading into the mangrove forest. Walking along a concrete path and onto a swaying bamboo bridge, they were surrounded by hundreds of lush mangrove trees. The guide explained how mangroves absorb salt from seawater, sparking students' curiosity about their environmental benefits. After a break at the Mangrove House Cafe, they explored the forest by boat, navigating its maze-like paths. The experience offered a fresh perspective on nature and conservation for students from grades 9 to 12.

In the afternoon, students planted two mangrove trees each. While some were initially uncomfortable with the sensation of mud and water surrounding their ankles, they quickly regained focus, fully immersing themselves in the planting process. The students felt a deep sense of responsibility and accomplishment, imagining how the trees they planted would grow into strong, deep-rooted symbols of conservation. They also had time to share food, build friendships, and socialise with fellow participants, fostering a collective commitment to environmental stewardship beyond just planting trees.

Thalia, a student from France, reflected on the project, stating, "This activity reminded us of the importance of environmental protection and how small actions contribute to a better future." Lewi, an 11th grader, emphasised the opportunity to reconnect with nature, describing the experience as meaningful for Jakarta’s environmental conservation. Samantha Huang, a 10th grader and returning participant, shared that her long-standing interest in nature conservation deepened through this activity, which has also helped her explore potential career paths in the field.

Amanda Munandar, an 11th grader and head of Mangroovy, explained that the project has been ongoing since last year and was designed to give students a hands-on experience in nature. Although activities were paused during the pandemic, she expressed hope that more students will continue to participate in environmental protection initiatives in the future.

Due to rapid industrialization, Indonesia's mangrove forests have drastically diminished, shrinking from 3.5 million hectares to 3.3 million in just three years, with 200,000 hectares permanently lost. This highlights the urgent need for conservation and restoration efforts, as mangroves play a critical role in protecting marine ecosystems and mitigating coastal erosion. Park Seung-heon, a 10th grader from ACS Jakarta, poignantly highlighted the urgency of action, stating, "Even if the Earth perishes tomorrow, I will plant one mangrove today," underscoring the ongoing commitment to environmental protection.

The "Mangrow with Me" project represents more than just planting trees; it symbolises planting seeds of hope for Indonesia's future. The students' dedication to preserving mangrove forests reflects their desire for each tree to grow into a natural seawall, protecting the coastline. This initiative serves as a crucial first step toward addressing Indonesia's environmental challenges, encouraging participants to actively engage in conservation efforts and understand the significance of protecting the environment beyond mere experiences. The project fosters both awareness and action for a sustainable future.

인도네시아에 희망을 심는 ‘Mangrow with Me’ 프로젝트

2024년 9월 8일,  ACS Jakarta를 비롯한 30명의 국제학교 학생들이 자카르타 북부의 맹그로브 생태공원 ‘Taman Wisata Alam Mangrove Angke Kapuk’에 ‘Mangrow with me’ 프로젝트에 참가하기 위해 모였다. 이 생태공원은 인도네시아 자연보호구역 중 하나로, 맹그로브가 군락을 이루어 해일과 태풍을 막아주는 천연 방파제 역할을 하고 있다.

‘Mangrow with Me’는 2022년 ACS 자카르타 학생들이 주도해 설립한 Mangroovy 그룹의 자연 보호 프로젝트다. Mangroovy는 창립 첫해에 100그루의 맹그로브를 심으며 본격적인 활동을 시작했으며, 2024년에는 더 많은 인원이 참여해 맹그로브 숲을 확장하기 위한 노력을 이어가고 있다. 박승헌 학생은 “이번 프로젝트를 통해 인도네시아 사회에 더 널리 환경 보호의 중요성을 알리고자 한다”며 의지를 밝혔다.

이날 오전 11시 30분, 학생들은 공원 입구에 모여 간단한 오리엔테이션을 마친 후 맹그로브 숲으로 향했다. 콘크리트 길을 지나 대나무 다리에 들어서자 양 옆으로 펼쳐진 수백 그루의 맹그로브 나무들이 장관을 이루었다. 흔들리는 대나무 다리는 긴장감을 주었지만, 안내원의 “맹그로브가 바닷물의 염분을 흡수해 환경을 보호한다”는 설명이 학생들의 호기심을 자극했다. 숲 한가운데 자리 잡은 색다른 풍경의 Mangrove House Cafe에서 잠시 휴식을 취한 후, 학생들은 보트를 타고 맹그로브 숲을 돌아보았다. 미로 같은 숲에서 다양한 야생동물을 만나며 탐험의 즐거움을 느낀 학생들은, 마치 시간 여행을 하는 듯한 경험을 나누었다. 9학년부터 12학년까지 다양한 학년이 함께한 이 탐험은 자연과 환경 보호에 대한 새로운 시각을 제공했다.

오후에는 학생들이 직접 두 그루의 맹그로브 나무를 심는 활동이 이어졌다. 발목을 감싸는 진흙과 양말 사이로 스며드는 물의 촉감에 당황하는 학생도 있었지만, 곧 평온을 되찾고 나무 심기에 집중했다. 환경 보호 활동에 대한 책임감과 성취감을 느낀 학생들은, 자신의 손으로 심은 나무들이 훗날 뿌리 깊은 나무로 성장할 것을 기대하며 즐거운 상상을 펼쳤다. 프로젝트 중간중간, 학생들은 음식을 사서 나누어먹고 유대감을 높이며 다른 학교 친구들과도 어울릴 수 있었다. ACS Jakarta를 포함한 ‘Mangrow with me’ 프로젝트에 참가한 학생들은 단순히 나무를 심는 것을 넘어, 환경 보호에 대한 책임감을 느꼈다.

프랑스 출신의 Thalia는 “이번 활동을 통해 환경 보호의 중요성을 다시 한 번 깨달았고, 더 나은 미래를 위해 우리가 할 수 있는 작은 일들에 관심을 가져야 한다”고 소감을 전했다. 11학년 Lewi는 “자연과 다시 연결되는 기회였고, 자카르타의 환경 보호에 기여할 수 있어 뜻깊었다”고 밝혔다. 또, 작년에 이어 올해도 참가한 10학년 Samantha Huang은 “어릴 때부터 자연 보호에 관심이 많았으며, 이번 활동을 통해 환경에 대한 이해가 깊어졌다”며, 장래 진로를 탐색하는 데에도 큰 도움이 되었다고 말했다.

Mangroovy의 대표 Amanda Munandar(ACS Jakarta, 11학년)는 “작년부터 이끌어온 이 프로젝트는 학생들이 자연 속에서 몸소 체험할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 기획되었다. 팬데믹으로 활동이 잠시 중단되었지만, 더 많은 학생들이 함께하면서 앞으로도 지속적으로 환경 보호를 위한 활동을 이어가길 바란다”고 전했다.

안내원이 맹그로브 나무의 잎사귀가 바닷물의 염분을 흡수해 짠맛이 난다는 흥미로운 사실을 알려주었다. 학생들은 호기심에 잎사귀를 살짝 떼어 맛보았고, 실제로 짠맛이 입안에 퍼지자 놀라며 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 처음 겪는 자연의 신비로운 경험에 학생들은 잎사귀 맛을 서로 비교하며, 맹그로브 숲의 놀라운 생태적 기능에 대해 더욱 관심을 갖게 되었다.

프로젝트에 참가한 학생들은 숲 한복판에 놓인 대나무 다리를 건넜다. 발밑에서 삐걱거리는 소리를 내는 다리 양옆으로는 무성한 맹그로브 나무들이 줄지어 서 있었다. 학생들은 다리를 건너면서 약간의 긴장감을 느꼈지만, 주변을 둘러싼 초록빛 풍경과 맹그로브 나무 사이로 스며드는 바람에 한껏 들떴다. 다리 아래로는 고요하게 흐르는 물속을 헤엄치는 작은 물고기를 보며 ‘자연의 조화’를 느꼈다. 

숲 한가운데 자리한 ‘Mangrove House Cafe’는 마치 자연 속에 숨겨진 오아시스처럼 보였다. 대나무와 목재로 지어진 이 카페는 맹그로브 나무들로 둘러싸여 있어서 시원한 그늘 아래에서 자연의 아름다움을 만끽할 수 있었다. 

학생들은 맹그로브 숲 가장자리의 진흙 속으로 조심스럽게 발을 들였다. 안내원의 지시에 따라 각자에게 나눠진 작은 맹그로브 묘목을 손에 쥔 채, 진흙 속에 구멍을 파고 그곳에 묘목을 심었다. 발목까지 차오르는 진흙과 물의 미끌거림에 당황하기도 했지만, 곧 익숙해져 나무 심기에 몰두했다. 진흙 속에 나무가 단단히 자리 잡을 때마다 맹그로브 묘목이 자라 인도네시아를 지켜줄 든든한 방파제가 될 것을 상상하며, 뿌듯한 미소를 지었다.

최근 급격한 산업화로 인해 인도네시아의 맹그로브 숲이 빠르게 감소하고 있다. 3년 전만 해도 약 350만 헥타르에 달하던 맹그로브 숲은 현재 330만 헥타르로 축소되었으며, 이 중 20만 헥타르의 숲은 영구적으로 파괴되었다. 이러한 상황에서 남은 맹그로브를 보호하고 그 서식지를 복원하려는 노력이 그 어느 때보다 시급하다. 맹그로브 숲은 해양 생태계를 보호하고, 지질 변화로 인한 침식을 완화하는 중요한 역할을 한다. 따라서 맹그로브 서식지를 확장하는 것은 가라앉고 있는 인도네시아 해안 지역을 보호하는 데 중요한 기회가 될 것이다. 박승헌 학생(ACS Jakarta, 10학년)이 프로젝트의 소감을 밝히는 자리에서 말한 “내일 지구가 멸망할지라도, 오늘 한 그루의 맹그로브를 심겠다”는 다짐은 환경 보호의 중요성을 다시 한 번 일깨운다.

인도네시아에 희망을 심는 ‘Mangrow with Me’ 프로젝트는 단순히 나무를 심는 활동을 넘어, 미래를 위한 작은 씨앗을 심는다는 의미를 지닌다. 맹그로브 숲의 중요성을 깨닫고 이를 보존하려는 학생들의 열정이 모여, 한 그루 한 그루의 나무가 인도네시아 해안선을 지켜줄 방파제로 자라나길 바라는 마음을 담았다. 이 프로젝트는 맹그로브 나무 심기를 통해 자연을 보존하는 동시에, 인도네시아의 환경 문제를 해결하려는 작은 첫걸음이다. 학생들이 직접 참여하여 나무를 심는 과정은 단순한 체험을 넘어, 그들이 환경 보호의 중요성을 깨닫고 실천할 수 있는 계기가 될 것이라 확신한다. http://www.innekorean.or.id/hanin/bbs/board.php?bo_table=news&wr_id=4782&page=2
