South Korea, an okay place to live?

The world’s 10th largest economy,

Model response to COVID-19,

The world’s 6th largest military power,

World-famous K-culture.

A country visited by 17.5 million people in 2019,

Does this make South Korea a good enough country to live in?

We ask again. 

South Korea, an okay place to live? 

“All citizens have dignity and value as human beings and have the right to pursue happiness. The state is obligated to affirm and guarantee the inviolable, basic human rights of individuals.” 

Many who dreamt of realizing Article 10 of the Korean Constitution have since left us. In South Korea, many people still suffer at the margins of society amid discrimination and hatred just because they’re not the “majority” or because they are “different”. Neither economic growth nor military power can prevent discrimination and hate.

 Those who couldn’t wait any longer for “later” to arrive have since left us.

We can’t afford to lose anyone else. There should be “no later” when it comes to human lives. The Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination law must be legislated RIGHT NOW. 

There’s no boundary between discrimination and hatred. They grow in small gaps in our society. 

We are all too familiar with the inevitable violence and harm caused by discrimination and hate. Each day brings news of new hate crimes. Why should people be treated differently because of their ethnicity, age, language, religion, sexual orientation or any other part of their identity? Being different is not wrong and everyone has the right to live as who they are.

In a society that allows discrimination against people for being different - none of us are free. 

South Korea's Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Law aims to protect people from facing discrimination and hatred. Although we look to Korea from around the world, we share the desire to see the country become a place where no one is discriminated against or hated because they are different. 

Everyone is different. This diversity is exactly why we all need the Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination law.

‘나중’은 없다, ‘지금 당장’ 차별금지법 제정!

한국, 살만한가요? 

경제 10위의 선진국,

코로나 19 방역 모범국,

세계 6위의 군사 강국,

K-컬쳐 문화 강국,

2019년 1,750만명의 방문자가 다녀간 문화 관광국

이정도면 살만한가요? 

다시 묻습니다. 

한국, 살만한가요?

“모든 국민은 인간으로서의 존엄과 가치를 가지며, 행복을 추구할 권리를 가진다. 국가는 개인이 가지는 불가침의 기본적 인권을 확인하고 이를 보장할 의무를 진다.”

한국의 헌법 제10조의 실현을 꿈꾸는 많은 이들이 우리 곁을 떠났습니다. 경제 성장도, 군사력도 ‘모두가 살만한’ 세상을 보장하지 못했습니다.

한국에는 ‘다수’가 아니란 이유로, ‘다른 모습’이라는 이유로 차별과 혐오 속에 삶의 가장자리에서 고통받는 이들이 있습니다.

차별과 혐오에는 경계가 없습니다. 우리 사회의 작은 틈에서 차별과 혐오가 만들어집니다.

더 이상 그들을 잃을 수 없습니다. ‘지금 당장’ 포괄적 차별금지법이 제정되어야 합니다.

한국의 포괄적 차별금지법은 다른 것에 대한 차별과 혐오를 금지하는 법입니다.

한국으로부터 멀리 떠나있는 우리도 한국의 평등을 실천할 수 있습니다.우리는 모두 다릅니다. '다른' 우리 모두를 위해 차별금지법이 필요합니다.
